The NIOD Institute for War-, Holocaust and Genocide Studies organised, in cooperation with the University of Amsterdam, a public event and a symposium on the Gulag system in the Soviet Union during the Stalin era. Despite the big scope of the Gulag system, which under Stalin assumed unprecedented proportions, a tendency of removing this era from Russia's past is growing. This also includes the repression of memories regarding this period in time. On 7 and 8 November, the NIOD paid attention to this complex subject, also in the light of the Holland-Russia year 2013 which is officially closed between 4 and 11 November.
